A Visitors Guide To Stockholm Sweden A Visitors Guide To Stockholm Sweden by Thomas Smith

Stockholm is a city that truly knows how to support its people. The largest of Sweden's 290 self-governing political units, Stockholm provides government-funded schools (through the college level), childcare, and housing-amongst other social service benefits-to its citizens. Sure, the taxes may be steep, but the high quality of life-as evidenced by the city's dazzling beauty and the happiness of its citizens-more than makes up for this. It's no wonder, then that hundreds of people from around the world immigrate to Stockholm every year in hopes of gaining citizenship. However, there's no need to relocate to Sweden to take advantage of the many cultural and entertainment opportunities available in Stockholm.

The summer and fall months are the best times to visit Stockholm. Unlike other European tourist destinations, spring is the region's busy season. Summer and fall bring slightly warmer temperatures (ranging from 68 degrees to 77 degrees and 41 to 64 degrees, respectively), fewer crowds, and lower hotel prices. In a place as jam-packed with things to see and do as Stockholm, having less people around can make the difference between actually getting to do the things on your itinerary and being forced to stand in long lines all day.

European travel can be pricey, but in a city known for its fantastic design sense, you don't need to spend a lot of money to stay somewhere stylish. Travel + Leisure Magazine sites Hotel Rival (Mariatorget 3, S-118 91 Stockholm) as one of Stockholm's best hotels. This boutique hotel-owned by former ABBA member Benny Andersson-features 99 beautifully decorated rooms (which start at less than $200 a night for a double), each with 32" plasma screen TVs, CD/DVD players, and wireless internet access. Other amenities include a bar, bistro, caf, and a bakery known for serving up the best bread in the city.

With all there is to do in this marvelous city, you might want to consider getting a Stockholm Card. This one, two, or three-day pass (which cost about $38, $59, and $75, respectively) allows you to explore over 75 of Stockholm's top tourist attractions and ride any of the city's highly-efficient means of public transportation (which include its bus, metro, and train systems). The Stockholm Card also provides tourists with discounts at local eateries and boutiques. This is the smart way for travelers to gain access to Stockholm's many attractions and can be purchased ahead of time on the city's website.

The city is home to an incredible number of museums-over 100 in all-so every tourist is sure to find at least one that will suit his or her interests. An excellent museum for visitors of all ages is the International Child Art Museum, located at Vrby All 14 , 143 03 Vrby. Founded in 1996, this wonderful showcase features the artwork of children from around the globe. No matter which museums you decide to go to, remember that none of them will be open on Mondays, due to routine maintenance (this will also be important to keep in mind when scheduling the start date of your Stockholm Card). Dining options in Stockholm are just as varied as the museums, with cuisine from countries around the world, including Asia, the Middle East, and the rest of Europe. As for shopping, make sure to head to Gamla Stan (located in the older section of the city) so you can buy handmade gifts for your friends and family back home.
