Suggestion on how to plan a Scandinavian holiday…

If you like adventure, being on the move and setting the pace yourself; Fasten your seatbelt and get
ready to invade the Vikings.
Before you read further , I suggest you add this page to your favorites….in case you get waylaid by
bandits and links on your way – so you can find your way back.
The following is just a suggestion from a native with Viking Ancestors. You can get inspired, use
some of the information to plan your trip, go for a
minicruise or do the whole thing....it s all up to you!

Your journey starts in Newcastle, England where  you take
the Sea Crossing to Bergen, Norway.
Bring your car or
rent a car…it will take you all the way through Norway, Sweden and Denmark and
back to the
UK again at the end of your quest.

This is your map overview of the Sea Crossing
Norway is expensive - there
is no discussion about that -
but it is also an experience
you will remenber and in the
end you decide what you
want to spend.

If you choose to stay around
Bergen and go the same
way back you can save quite
a lot with
the Bergen Card.
With that in your pocket, you
get free bus rides in Bergen,
 free parking, and free
admission or discounts to
museums and attractions,
many cultural events,
various sightseeing trips,
restaurants and shopping.
Let s have a little taster of what Norway is
like with the video "Oslo / Bergen"  from
Travel Video PostCard.
Start your tour by exploring the city of Bergen. Make sure you don’t miss the old Hanseatic wharf at
Bryggen, the Fish market, the view from Mount Fløyen or Bergen Aquarium while visiting Western
Norway’s biggest city!

How long you choose to stay in Bergen is all up to you, but when you are ready to leave the road will
take you from
Bergen to Norheimsund - Eidfjord - Hardangervidda (Northern Europe’s largest high-
mountain plateau and Norway’s biggest national park) -
Geilo - Nesbyen - Hønefoss - and finally to
Oslo. This is a beautiful drive with breathtaking views. It`s also a stretch of 500 km and it will take you
approximately 8 hours.
Geilo Youth Hostel
Private rooms available.

Geilo is about half way
to Oslo if you want to
stop for the night.
Spend a few days in Norway’s capital city. Oslo has many attractions, teeming crowds and an abundance
of restaurants and accommodation to choose from. Enjoy
a coach tour through the city  and see the
center of Oslo, Holmenkollen Ski Jump and Ski Museum,
The Viking ships and Kon-Tiki Raft. You will
also visit the
Norwegian Folk Museum and Vigeland Sculpture Park. Another thing not to be missed
is an
Oslo Fjord Sightseeing Cruise. Be sure to bring your camera as this stunning area is known for
its beauty. Travel through a pristine paradise, and relax as the boat sails along pushed by a gentle
breeze. This tour is seasonal and operates from April to September only.

When your done with Oslo - if that ever happens - you have two choices; you can either drive onboard a
ferry to Copenhagen in the late afternoon and disembark into the Danish capital city the next
morning or you can drive down through southern Sweden and cross over the bridge to Denmark.

Taking the ferry saves you both the hotel room in Oslo and the fuel to take your car through
Sweden -
but then you miss out on the Swedish Vikings! Not an easy choice....

Okay..we re off to Sweden....some of us, me being Danish know
Good Old Copenhagen will still be
there when we arrive from our detour to
Stockholm.

The distance between Oslo and Stockholm is  417 kilometers - so let`s get it over with.

Stockholm is known for a lot more than ABBA. Here you can experience
The Golden Viking Era , and
get as up close and personal as you ever will be to
the famous Alfred Nobel. See where he lived and
visit the  Nobel Museum...but whatever you do - allow yourself to feel the atmospheric Old Town of
Stockholm. Watch the video:
The Old Town of Stockholm.

Celebrations in
Norway

The country's
biggest holiday is
the 17th of May,
Constitution Day,
when many
Norwegians take to
the streets attired
in traditional folk
costumes.

Another popular
holiday is
Midsummer's Eve
on 23rd of June
which is celebrated
with bonfires on the
beach.

Mini-Cruise
from Newcastle to
Bergen
An exciting walk through the narrow
streets of the Old Town or why not
by
horse and carriage?  The
guide will tell you about the life in
these quarters from the 13th
century until our present days...and
it will all be accompanied by the
charming clattering against the
cobbled streets!
To get from Stockholm to Copenhagen is about 600km, highway almost all the way so depending on
your speed -  it will take some 6-8 hours. Head for
Malmo and the bridge that connect Sweden and
Denmark.
This modern high tech Bridge connect Copenhagen , the Danish capital, and third largest city of Sweden
- Malmo. The area of Copenhagen ( 2,3 million inhabitants ) and Greater Malmo ( including Lund and
Trelleborg ) together count over 3,5 million people , which makes Oresund region the largest urban area
in
Scandinavia. For a standard car you will be charged 260 Danish Kroner to cross (approx.35 EUR).

Gardens, the Free Town of Christiania (A more than 30 year old Hippie Community  / social
experiment), the first country in Europe to release pornography and with a well-known reputation for
being liberal. Denmark has recently been votet "the best country in the world to live in". Copenhagen is
famed for its spirited nightlife, lively cafe and music scene. Watch the
video from Copenhagen.   Hope
you are not "Towned Out" by now as Copenhagen has so much to offer. If you do need a change of pace
- why not rent a holiday home in
Hornbaek -  one of Denmark’s most popular holiday resorts...in driving
distance from Copenhagen.
Hornbaek Harbour is a very active, modern yachting harbour having all the
necessary facilities. Local sports fishermen follow in the tracks of their ancestors, who fished there for a
living four hundred years ago. For many years both the harbour and the beach have been awarded the
“Blue Flag”.
