El Rocio off the beaten track
El Rocio

Andalucía celebrates many religious
festivals throughout the year and
one of the largest is in the small
dusty town of El Rocio in the
southwest. This pilgrimage or
'romeria' is attended by the faithful
(and not so devout) from all part
of Andalucia, Spain and the world.

Many local Andalucians will travel
on foot, by ox-cart and horseback
for many days to celebrate and
worship the Virgen del Rocío or the
"Madonna of the Dew". This event
is tied to the Pentecostal Days so
dates vary from year to year. Next
date is May 12th 2008.

What is essentially a religious
celebration is also a huge party.
The whole town (reminiscent to
film viewers of an old Mexican
pueblo) is turned over to the
festival. Mule teams with highly
polished wagons and gaily
decorated ox-carts mix with
'caballeros' and women in their
flamenco dresses. This truly is a
wonderful event with the festivities
carrying on all through the night.

El Rocio is set in the marshlands of
the Guadalquivir River delta
surrounded by pine forests
between Huelva and Seville (south
of Almonte) With over one million
people attending this week long
televised event book
accommodation early or be
prepared to camp out as most
people do. A word of caution: this
is marshland, beware, it is
mosquito heaven so come
prepared!
