From here you will have access to the ridges of the lower hills, as
well as the high peaks, which leads towards glacial lakes and
rugged terrain. The most popular areas include: Col de Puymorens,
the Col de Pailheres and the Ariege Pyrenees.
The Pyrenees are serious mountains, and the weather shifts
rapidly, so treat them with respect. Always check the weather
forecasts before you venture out and make sure you are well
prepared and equipped. If you are not used to mountain walking,
do yourself and the rescue team a favor: get an experienced guide!

Exploring the Pyrenees by foot is rewarding for bird-watchers who
are likely to see vultures and eagles, and if plants are your thing,
you can find more than 3.000 species of flora.

Besides from walking in breathtaking surroundings the area of
Ax-les-Thermes has a lot more to offer. Being so close to Andorra -
crossing the border for shopping or a visit to the casino is a
possibility. So is visiting the castle at Montsegur approximately
40km away.

When you are staying in Ax-les-Thermes it is almost a must to dip
your body in the Bassin des Ladres, the hot sulphurous water
pool, which is said to have healing powers.

Getting to Ax-les-Thermes can be done by road or train. The
railway station is on avenue Delcassé and you can get direct night
train from Paris.
